WHAT? CollegeLINK is a partnership program between Northern Lights Secondary School and Northern College in Moosonee. At CollegeLINK, students can take high school courses through eLearning or independent learning workbooks. Up to four courses can be ‘Dual Credits’ which are actual college courses in which students can earn both a high school credit and a college credit.
WHO? CollegeLINK is great for older students that are close to graduation (who have at least 20 credits), are serious about getting their diploma, but prefer a different learning environment than the regular high school. The program is aimed at students over 18.
WHERE? The courses take place at the Moosonee Northern College campus. Much of the work is expected to be done at home on the student’s own time.
WHY? CollegeLINK helps older students graduate. Students can finish their credits in a more mature, flexible and independent atmosphere. The dual credit program also gives students a taste of college and helps them prepare for a college program.
WHEN? CollegeLINK’s high school courses follow the high school calendar year while dual credits follow the college calendar year, which is shorter. For instance, the first semester in high school ends in January, while the first semester at college ends in December. Class hours are different each semester.
HOW? Most of the work is completed online. When working at the college, students can use school provided laptops with wireless internet, or bring their own device. Some courses are completed through correspondence workbooks developed by ilc.org. Students are able to work at their own pace. They will be expected to set completion goals along the way.
